Social Media: What are you waiting for?

Still thinking this whole social media craze is just a passing fancy? Are you standing on the edge of the cliff deciding whether or not to take the plunge? Or, are you ready to jump in but unsure of your first step?

If you read the press clippings you can find that entering social media can be quite intimidating. Which service? What do I say? And, to quote the Talking Heads: “…how do I work this?”

Stop thinking and start doing. Heed the words of Yoda.

Check out this recent article from The Shorthorn about Tom’s Burgers and Grill. The owner – Tom Jones – realizes he needs to advance his restaurant’s cause via social media.

So, he set up a Facebook page.

It’s not particularly dramatic. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of attention being paid to consistent posting. And, there are only 65 fans.

Time will tell if Tom’s efforts in social media will yield positive results but at least he’s making the effort.

As you ponder your first foray into social media, do yourself a favor. Stop pondering and start doing.

You can think of a million reasons why you shouldn’t have a social media presence. Technological ignorance, time management, content development – these are challenges that must be met to have a successful social media campaign.

But, social media marketing is a marathon – not a sprint. It differs from other marketing platforms in that it is a slower build. The upside is that effective social media marketing creates deeper and longer lasting relationships.

So, stop thinking and start doing. Go to Facebook – today! – and build a page for your business or nonprofit. You can do it right here. Go to twitter.com and set up an account and start listening.

Start small but start now.

Your thoughts?
